Summary
NSAIDs such as diflunisal blunt the diuretic and natriuretic response to loop diuretics and may reduce the antihypertensive effect. In volume-depleted or susceptible patients the combination can also contribute to acute kidney injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Diflunisal and Furosemide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Diflunisal belongs to Musculoskeletal; Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis reduces renal blood flow and sodium excretion, antagonizing furosemide's effect.
What to do
Monitor urine output, weight, blood pressure and renal function, and increase the diuretic dose if needed. Use the lowest effective diflunisal dose for the shortest duration.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
