Summary

Antibiotics can raise digoxin levels in the small subset of patients whose gut bacteria (Eggerthella lenta) inactivate it. This is described mainly with tetracyclines and macrolides and may cause digoxin toxicity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Digoxin and Minocycline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Digoxin belongs to Cardiovascular; Minocycline belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Suppression of intestinal flora that metabolize digoxin increases its absorbed fraction.

What to do

Monitor digoxin concentrations and watch for nausea, arrhythmias or visual changes when starting minocycline. Reduce the digoxin dose if levels rise.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
