Summary
Dopamine and dobutamine are frequently given together for hemodynamic support, but their combined adrenergic effects can increase heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand. Tachycardia, arrhythmias and ischemia may occur, especially at higher doses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dobutamine and Dopamine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Dobutamine belongs to Cardiovascular; Dopamine belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive beta-1 adrenergic stimulation of the heart.
What to do
Titrate both infusions to hemodynamic targets with continuous ECG and blood pressure monitoring. Reduce doses if tachyarrhythmia or ischemia appears.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
