Domperidone + Polyethylene Glycol 3350

For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Overview

Severity: Moderate · Evidence level: Moderate

Excessive use of polyethylene glycol 3350 can cause diarrhea-related electrolyte loss (e.g., hypokalemia), which increases domperidone-associated QT prolongation and torsades de pointes risk.

Mechanism of action

Pharmacodynamic: Electrolyte abnormalities (especially hypokalemia/hypomagnesemia) potentiate domperidone’s QT-prolonging effects; no meaningful pharmacokinetic interaction expected.

Clinical management

Avoid excessive laxative use; if persistent diarrhea occurs, check and correct potassium/magnesium before or during domperidone therapy. Consider ECG monitoring in high-risk patients. Hold domperidone or reduce/stop PEG 3350 if electrolyte disturbances or cardiac symptoms develop.
