Drug interactions
Dexlansoprazole + Domperidone
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Proton pump inhibitor–induced hypomagnesemia (and possible hypokalemia) can increase susceptibility to domperidone-associated QT prolongation and torsades de pointes, especially with prolonged PPI use or additional risk factors.
Mechanism of action
Pharmacodynamic: Dexlansoprazole can cause hypomagnesemia (and secondary hypokalemia), which potentiates the QTc-prolonging effect of domperidone. No meaningful pharmacokinetic interaction is expected.
Clinical management
If used together, use the lowest effective domperidone dose and shortest duration; correct baseline electrolytes (Mg, K, Ca) and recheck magnesium periodically if PPI therapy exceeds 2–4 weeks; obtain ECG or increase monitoring in patients with cardiac disease, existing QT prolongation, or additional QT-risk drugs; consider alternative antiemetics if high risk.
