Summary
Ritonavir is a very potent CYP3A4 inhibitor and can greatly increase eletriptan concentrations. This may cause severe vasoconstriction, hypertension and cardiovascular events.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eletriptan and Ritonavir are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Eletriptan belongs to Central Nervous System; Ritonavir belongs to Anti Virals.
Why it happens
Potent inhibition of CYP3A4-mediated metabolism of eletriptan.
What to do
Do not use eletriptan within 72 hours of ritonavir. Select a triptan not reliant on CYP3A4 clearance.
