Summary
Fluoxetine strongly inhibits CYP2D6, and the metabolic handling of eluxadoline is incompletely characterised. Exposure to eluxadoline may therefore rise, increasing the likelihood of its adverse effects such as constipation, nausea and abdominal pain.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eluxadoline and Fluoxetine have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Eluxadoline belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Fluoxetine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Fluoxetine inhibits CYP2D6, which may reduce the clearance of eluxadoline, though its contribution to eluxadoline metabolism is not well established.
What to do
Monitor for eluxadoline adverse effects such as constipation and abdominal pain, and reduce the dose or stop if they develop.
