Summary
Epinephrine and amphetamine both stimulate the sympathetic system, so together they can cause greater increases in blood pressure and heart rate and may precipitate arrhythmias. The effect is more pronounced with systemic epinephrine than with small local anesthetic doses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Epinephrine and Lisdexamfetamine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Epinephrine belongs to Endocrine; Lisdexamfetamine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive sympathomimetic effects: direct adrenergic agonism plus amphetamine-induced catecholamine release.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, heart rate and ECG when systemic epinephrine is needed. Use the lowest effective epinephrine dose, but do not withhold it in anaphylaxis.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
