For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.

Summary

Amphetamines release large amounts of norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin, and MAO inhibition prevents their breakdown. This can cause hypertensive crisis, hyperthermia and serotonin syndrome. Labeling contraindicates use during and for 14 days after an MAOI.

What this interaction means in plain words

Lisdexamfetamine and Phenelzine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Lisdexamfetamine belongs to Central Nervous System; Phenelzine belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Irreversible MAO inhibition lets released monoamines accumulate, producing excessive adrenergic and serotonergic stimulation.

What to do

Do not co-administer, and separate by at least 14 days after stopping phenelzine. Choose a non-stimulant alternative if ADHD or binge-eating treatment is needed.
