Summary
Barbiturates induce hepatic enzymes and can lower exposure to some beta-blockers. Esmolol is cleared by red blood cell esterases and not by CYP enzymes, and has a very short half-life, so a meaningful interaction is not expected.
What this interaction means in plain words
Esmolol and Secobarbital have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Esmolol belongs to Cardiovascular; Secobarbital belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Enzyme induction by secobarbital does not affect esmolol, which is hydrolyzed by erythrocyte esterases.
What to do
No dose adjustment is needed. Titrate esmolol to clinical response as usual.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
