Summary
Antibiotics were once thought to lower oral estrogen levels by disrupting gut flora and enterohepatic recycling. Evidence for non-rifamycin antibiotics such as ofloxacin shows no meaningful loss of hormonal effect, and clinically important failure is unlikely.
What this interaction means in plain words
Estradiol and Ofloxacin have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Estradiol belongs to Endocrine; Ofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Theoretical reduction in enterohepatic recirculation of estrogen from altered gut flora; not shown to be clinically significant.
What to do
No change in estrogen therapy is generally needed. Advise additional contraception only if vomiting or severe diarrhea occurs.
