Summary

NSAIDs can reduce the diuretic and natriuretic response to loop diuretics and increase the risk of acute kidney injury. Ethacrynic acid may also add to gastrointestinal bleeding risk and ototoxicity risk is unaffected but renal risk is higher.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ethacrynic acid and Oxaprozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Ethacrynic acid belongs to Cardiovascular; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Oxaprozin inhibits renal prostaglandin synthesis, causing sodium retention and reducing renal blood flow, which opposes loop diuretic effect.

What to do

Monitor diuretic response, weight, blood pressure, renal function and electrolytes. Use the lowest NSAID dose for the shortest time, with extra care in heart failure or cirrhosis.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
