What this interaction means in plain words

Etravirine and Secobarbital can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Etravirine belongs to Anti Virals; Secobarbital belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Barbiturate induction of CYP3A4, CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 increases etravirine clearance.

What to do

Avoid the combination and choose a non-inducing sedative. If unavoidable, monitor HIV RNA closely.
