Summary
Zafirlukast is a weak CYP3A4 inhibitor and may raise flibanserin exposure. Higher flibanserin levels increase the risk of hypotension, syncope and CNS depression, particularly if other CYP3A4 inhibitors are also taken.
What this interaction means in plain words
Flibanserin and Zafirlukast can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Flibanserin belongs to Genitourinary; Zafirlukast belongs to Respiratory.
Why it happens
Inhibition of CYP3A4-mediated metabolism of flibanserin by zafirlukast.
What to do
Counsel the patient about dizziness, low blood pressure and sedation, and avoid alcohol. Avoid adding further CYP3A4 inhibitors, and consider an alternative to zafirlukast if adverse effects occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
