Summary
Nateglinide is metabolized mainly by CYP2C9 and partly by CYP3A4. Fluconazole inhibits CYP2C9 and may increase nateglinide exposure, raising the risk of hypoglycemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Fluconazole and Nateglinide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Fluconazole belongs to Anti Fungals; Nateglinide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Fluconazole inhibits CYP2C9 (and CYP3A4), decreasing nateglinide clearance.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose closely when starting or stopping fluconazole. Reduce the nateglinide dose if hypoglycemia occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
