Summary

Sertraline impairs platelet function, and when taken with the anticoagulant fondaparinux it can raise the likelihood of bruising and clinically significant bleeding, particularly from the gastrointestinal tract. The risk is greatest in older patients and those with other bleeding risk factors.

What this interaction means in plain words

Fondaparinux and Sertraline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Fondaparinux belongs to Cardiovascular; Sertraline belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

SSRI-induced depletion of platelet serotonin impairs aggregation, adding to the factor Xa inhibition of fondaparinux (pharmacodynamic synergism).

What to do

Monitor for signs of bleeding and check hemoglobin periodically during combined therapy. Consider gastroprotection in patients at high gastrointestinal bleeding risk.
