Summary
Gemifloxacin can prolong the QT interval, and formoterol may add to this effect, especially if hypokalemia is present. Fluoroquinolones given with corticosteroids also carry an increased risk of tendinopathy and tendon rupture, though inhaled mometasone has low systemic exposure.
What this interaction means in plain words
Formoterol-mometasone and Gemifloxacin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Formoterol-mometasone belongs to Respiratory; Gemifloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation from fluoroquinolone ion channel blockade and beta-2 agonist effects, plus a possible additive tendon toxicity with corticosteroids.
What to do
Obtain an ECG and correct potassium and magnesium in patients with QT risk factors. Counsel patients to stop the fluoroquinolone and report tendon pain promptly.
