Summary

Fluoroquinolones and corticosteroids are each associated with tendinopathy, and combined use raises the risk of tendon inflammation or rupture, mainly with systemic steroids and in older patients. With inhaled mometasone the systemic exposure is low, so the added risk is small. Moxifloxacin and formoterol can also both prolong the QTc interval.

What this interaction means in plain words

Formoterol-mometasone and Moxifloxacin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Formoterol-mometasone belongs to Respiratory; Moxifloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive tendon toxicity from fluoroquinolones and corticosteroids, plus additive QT prolongation of moxifloxacin and formoterol.

What to do

Counsel patients to stop moxifloxacin and report tendon pain or swelling promptly. Consider ECG monitoring and correction of potassium in patients with QT risk factors.
