Summary
Foscarnet can prolong the QT interval and cause hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia, and indacaterol may add to potassium lowering and cardiac stimulation. This increases the risk of ventricular arrhythmia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Foscarnet and Indacaterol can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Foscarnet belongs to Anti Virals; Indacaterol belongs to Respiratory.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation, with foscarnet-induced electrolyte disturbances compounded by beta-2 agonist potassium shift.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium, magnesium and calcium, and the ECG, during foscarnet therapy. Correct electrolytes promptly and withhold indacaterol if QTc prolongation develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?

Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for. Foscarnet can prolong the QT interval and cause hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia, and indacaterol may add to potassium lowering and cardiac stimulation. This increases the risk of ventricular arrhythmia.
How serious is the interaction between Foscarnet and Indacaterol?
MediHelp rates it major, on a four-level scale (minor, moderate, major, contraindicated) based on published labels and references. What to do, in brief: Monitor serum potassium, magnesium and calcium, and the ECG, during foscarnet therapy. Correct electrolytes promptly and withhold indacaterol if QTc prolongation develops.
What other medicines interact with Indacaterol?
