Summary

Furosemide increases urinary magnesium excretion and commonly contributes to hypomagnesemia with chronic use. Low magnesium can worsen potassium depletion and raise arrhythmia risk, especially with digoxin or QT-prolonging drugs.

What this interaction means in plain words

Furosemide and Magnesium can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Furosemide belongs to Cardiovascular; Magnesium belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Inhibition of the Na-K-2Cl cotransporter in the thick ascending limb reduces magnesium reabsorption.

What to do

Monitor serum magnesium and potassium regularly during long-term therapy. Supplement magnesium as needed.
