furosemide + probenecid
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Probenecid reduces the diuretic/natriuretic effect of furosemide by inhibiting its renal tubular secretion; plasma levels may rise but intraluminal delivery and diuresis decline.
Mechanism of action
Probenecid inhibits renal OAT-mediated tubular secretion of furosemide, decreasing delivery to the nephron lumen and blunting diuretic efficacy; may increase systemic exposure.
Clinical management
Avoid combination when possible. If coadministered, monitor weight, edema, urine output, blood pressure, electrolytes, and renal function; adjust furosemide dose based on response.
