Summary
Gentamicin can cause renal magnesium wasting and hypomagnesemia during prolonged treatment. Magnesium depletion may worsen hypokalemia and hypocalcemia. Magnesium may also add to neuromuscular blockade from aminoglycosides.
What this interaction means in plain words
Gentamicin and Magnesium can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Gentamicin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Magnesium belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract.
Why it happens
Aminoglycoside tubular toxicity impairs renal magnesium reabsorption.
What to do
Monitor serum magnesium, potassium and calcium during extended courses and replace deficits.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
