Summary

NSAIDs can reduce renal function and may reduce gentamicin clearance, raising aminoglycoside levels. This increases the risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Gentamicin and Oxaprozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Gentamicin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

NSAID-induced inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces renal perfusion and glomerular filtration, decreasing aminoglycoside elimination and adding nephrotoxic burden.

What to do

Monitor serum creatinine and gentamicin trough levels, and adjust the gentamicin dose accordingly. Avoid the NSAID where possible in patients with renal impairment or dehydration.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
