Summary
Gepirone is contraindicated with MAO inhibitors, including linezolid, because of the risk of serotonin syndrome. Symptoms include agitation, hyperthermia, clonus and autonomic instability.
What this interaction means in plain words
Gepirone and Linezolid are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Gepirone belongs to Central Nervous System; Linezolid belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Additive serotonergic effects from serotonin receptor agonism and MAO inhibition.
What to do
Do not start gepirone within 14 days of stopping linezolid, and do not give linezolid to patients on gepirone unless urgent, then stop gepirone and monitor for serotonin toxicity.
