Summary

Gepirone is contraindicated with MAO inhibitors because of the risk of serotonin syndrome. This applies during therapy and for 14 days after an MAO inhibitor is stopped.

What this interaction means in plain words

Gepirone and Rasagiline are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Gepirone belongs to Central Nervous System; Rasagiline belongs to Central Nervous System.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Gepirone is a 5-HT1A agonist, and MAO inhibition raises serotonin levels, producing additive serotonergic activity.

What to do

Do not combine; wait at least 14 days after stopping an MAO inhibitor before starting gepirone, and 14 days after stopping gepirone before an MAO inhibitor.
