Summary
Sotagliflozin lowers blood glucose through urinary glucose loss, and combining it with a sulfonylurea such as glyburide raises the risk of hypoglycemia. The sulfonylurea effect is glucose-independent, so additive lowering can occur.
What this interaction means in plain words
Glibenclamide and Sotagliflozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Glibenclamide belongs to Endocrine; Sotagliflozin belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive glucose-lowering effects, with SGLT inhibition on top of sulfonylurea-driven insulin secretion.
What to do
Consider reducing the glyburide dose when starting sotagliflozin. Monitor blood glucose and teach the patient to recognise hypoglycemia.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
