Summary
Botulinum toxin type B blocks acetylcholine release, and systemic anticholinergics may amplify its effects. This can increase autonomic effects such as dry mouth, constipation and blurred vision, and spread of toxin effect may worsen weakness. The risk is greatest with higher toxin doses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Glycopyrronium and Rimabotulinumtoxinb can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Glycopyrronium belongs to Respiratory; Rimabotulinumtoxinb belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
Additive cholinergic inhibition, presynaptic blockade by the toxin plus postsynaptic muscarinic blockade by glycopyrronium.
What to do
Monitor for excessive weakness, dysphagia and anticholinergic effects after toxin injection. Consider avoiding or minimizing concurrent antimuscarinic dosing around injection if problems appear.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
