Summary
Procarbazine has weak monoamine oxidase inhibiting activity and can add to serotonergic and CNS effects when combined with an antipsychotic. This may increase the risk of serotonin toxicity, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, or excessive sedation and hypotension. The evidence is mostly theoretical.
What this interaction means in plain words
Haloperidol and Procarbazine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Haloperidol belongs to Central Nervous System; Procarbazine belongs to Oncology.
Why it happens
Weak MAO inhibition by procarbazine combined with dopamine D2 blockade by haloperidol; the exact mechanism of any interaction is not well established.
What to do
Monitor for agitation, hyperthermia, rigidity, tremor, and autonomic instability, especially after starting or increasing doses. Stop one agent if features of serotonin toxicity or neuroleptic malignant syndrome appear.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
