Summary
Haloperidol is partly metabolized by CYP2D6 as well as CYP3A4, so terbinafine may raise its concentrations. Increased exposure may heighten extrapyramidal effects, sedation and QT prolongation.
What this interaction means in plain words
Haloperidol and Terbinafine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Haloperidol belongs to Central Nervous System; Terbinafine belongs to Anti Fungals.
Why it happens
Terbinafine inhibits CYP2D6, decreasing haloperidol clearance.
What to do
Monitor for extrapyramidal symptoms and QTc prolongation, especially in patients with other QT risk factors. Reduce the haloperidol dose if needed.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
