Summary
This fixed-dose combination is used to limit potassium loss. Hyperkalemia can still develop, particularly in renal impairment, diabetes or with ACE inhibitors, and triamterene with thiazides has been linked to renal injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide and Triamterene can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Triamterene belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Triamterene blocks epithelial sodium channels, reducing potassium excretion, which counters thiazide-induced kaliuresis.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and renal function regularly. Avoid potassium supplements and other potassium-raising drugs unless hypokalemia is documented.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
