Summary
Thiazides raise serum uric acid and can oppose the uricosuric effect of probenecid, reducing its efficacy in gout. Probenecid may also raise hydrochlorothiazide levels by reducing its renal secretion.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide-lisinopril and Probenecid can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Hydrochlorothiazide-lisinopril belongs to Cardiovascular; Probenecid belongs to Genitourinary.
Why it happens
Thiazide-induced reduction in urate excretion and competition for renal tubular organic anion secretion between the two drugs.
What to do
Monitor serum uric acid and gout control, and adjust the probenecid dose if needed. Consider an alternative antihypertensive in patients with difficult gout.
