Summary
Trazodone has serotonergic activity that can impair platelet function, and together with ibuprofen this raises the risk of bleeding, particularly from the upper gastrointestinal tract. The risk is higher in older adults and with a history of ulcers.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ibuprofen and Trazodone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ibuprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Trazodone belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive impairment of platelet aggregation, via serotonin reuptake inhibition in platelets and NSAID cyclooxygenase inhibition, plus NSAID gastric mucosal injury.
What to do
Watch for signs of GI bleeding such as black stools or anemia, and consider gastroprotection with a proton pump inhibitor in high-risk patients. Use the lowest effective ibuprofen dose for the shortest time.
What to ask your pharmacist
