Summary

Voriconazole raises imatinib levels via CYP3A4 inhibition, and imatinib may in turn raise voriconazole levels by inhibiting CYP2C9, CYP2C19, and CYP3A4. This may increase adverse effects of both, including edema, myelosuppression, and QT effects.

What this interaction means in plain words

Imatinib and Voriconazole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Imatinib belongs to Oncology; Voriconazole belongs to Anti Fungals.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Mutual inhibition of CYP enzymes, mainly CYP3A4 for imatinib and CYP2C9/2C19 for voriconazole.

What to do

Monitor blood counts, liver tests, and the ECG, and watch for signs of toxicity from either drug. Reduce the imatinib dose if toxicity develops.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
