Summary
Miglitol lowers postprandial glucose and, with insulin, increases the risk of hypoglycemia. Because alpha-glucosidase inhibition blocks complex carbohydrate absorption, hypoglycemia must be treated with glucose rather than sucrose.
What this interaction means in plain words
Insulin glulisine and Miglitol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Insulin glulisine belongs to Endocrine; Miglitol belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive glucose lowering: miglitol delays intestinal carbohydrate digestion while insulin increases glucose disposal.
What to do
Monitor glucose and reduce insulin if hypoglycemia occurs. Instruct patients to treat hypoglycemia with oral glucose (dextrose), not table sugar.
What to ask your pharmacist
