Summary
Itraconazole can prolong the QT interval, and salbutamol may add to proarrhythmic risk through hypokalemia and tachycardia. Systemic exposure from inhaled salbutamol is low, so the risk is mainly in patients with other risk factors. Itraconazole may also modestly raise salbutamol exposure through CYP3A4/P-gp inhibition.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ipratropium-salbutamol and Itraconazole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Ipratropium-salbutamol belongs to Respiratory; Itraconazole belongs to Anti Fungals.
Why it happens
Additive QT prolongation and hypokalemia risk, with possible minor pharmacokinetic increase in salbutamol exposure.
What to do
Check potassium and magnesium and obtain a baseline ECG in patients with cardiac disease or other QT-prolonging drugs. Watch for palpitations or tremor and reduce salbutamol use if they occur.
What to ask your pharmacist
