Summary
Isoniazid has weak MAO inhibitor activity, which may add to the serotonergic effect of vilazodone and raise the risk of serotonin syndrome. Isoniazid may also inhibit CYP3A4 and modestly raise vilazodone concentrations. The pharmacodynamic risk is considered theoretical and rests mostly on case reports.
What this interaction means in plain words
Isoniazid and Vilazodone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Isoniazid belongs to Anti Bacterial; Vilazodone belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive serotonergic effects through weak MAO inhibition by isoniazid plus CYP3A4 inhibition reducing vilazodone clearance.
What to do
Monitor for agitation, tremor, diarrhea, hyperthermia and neuromuscular hyperactivity, particularly after dose changes. Stop both drugs and give supportive treatment if serotonin syndrome is suspected.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
