Summary
Both agents can prolong the QT interval, and used together they raise the risk of torsades de pointes. Risk is greater with hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, bradycardia or other QT-prolonging drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Levofloxacin and Voriconazole can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Levofloxacin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Voriconazole belongs to Anti Fungals.
Why it happens
Additive inhibition of cardiac repolarizing potassium currents causing QT prolongation.
What to do
Get a baseline ECG and correct electrolytes before starting, with repeat ECG during co-treatment. Choose a non-QT-prolonging antibiotic if the QTc becomes prolonged.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
