Summary
NSAIDs can reduce the antihypertensive effect of losartan and increase the risk of acute kidney injury and hyperkalemia. The risk is greatest in elderly, dehydrated or renally impaired patients, especially with a diuretic.
What this interaction means in plain words
Losartan and Oxaprozin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Losartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Oxaprozin belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAIDs inhibit vasodilatory renal prostaglandins, reducing glomerular perfusion while the ARB lowers efferent arteriolar tone, and both can impair potassium excretion.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting the NSAID and periodically thereafter. Ensure hydration and avoid the combination in patients at high renal risk.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
