Summary

Macimorelin is a diagnostic stimulant of growth hormone release, and glucocorticoids can alter growth hormone secretion. Concomitant glucocorticoid exposure may therefore distort the test result and lead to misdiagnosis of growth hormone deficiency.

What this interaction means in plain words

Macimorelin and Prednisone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Macimorelin belongs to Endocrine; Prednisone belongs to Endocrine.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Glucocorticoids affect pituitary growth hormone secretion and may alter the response to the ghrelin agonist macimorelin.

What to do

Where clinically possible, withhold or time prednisone and allow adequate washout before macimorelin testing. Interpret the results cautiously if corticosteroid therapy cannot be interrupted.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
