Summary
Trazodone has serotonergic activity that can impair platelet aggregation, and combined with an NSAID this increases the risk of bleeding, especially upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The risk is greater in older patients and those with prior ulcers.
What this interaction means in plain words
Meloxicam and Trazodone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Meloxicam belongs to Musculoskeletal; Trazodone belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Reduced platelet serotonin uptake combined with NSAID platelet inhibition and gastric mucosal injury.
What to do
Monitor for signs of gastrointestinal bleeding and consider a proton pump inhibitor in high-risk patients. Use the lowest effective NSAID dose or choose paracetamol.
