Summary
Probenecid inhibits renal tubular secretion of mycophenolic acid glucuronide and can raise concentrations of both the glucuronide and mycophenolic acid. This may increase the risk of mycophenolate adverse effects such as leukopenia and gastrointestinal toxicity.
What this interaction means in plain words
Mycophenolate mofetil and Probenecid can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Mycophenolate mofetil belongs to Miscellaneous; Probenecid belongs to Genitourinary.
Why it happens
Inhibition of renal tubular anion transport of mycophenolic acid glucuronide, reducing its clearance.
What to do
Monitor blood counts and consider reducing the mycophenolate dose if toxicity occurs. Consider an alternative to probenecid where possible.
