Nalidixic Acid + Sucralfate
For healthcare professionals — reference only. This page is a brief summary, not medical advice and not a substitute for official labeling or clinical judgement. Always verify before prescribing or dispensing.
Overview
Sucralfate can markedly decrease the oral absorption of nalidixic acid, increasing the risk of subtherapeutic antibiotic levels and treatment failure.
Mechanism of action
Chelation and adsorption by aluminum-containing sucralfate in the gastrointestinal tract forms nonabsorbable complexes, reducing nalidixic acid bioavailability.
Clinical management
Avoid coadministration. If both are required, administer nalidixic acid at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after sucralfate; monitor for clinical response and consider alternative therapy if efficacy is reduced.
