What this interaction means in plain words
Neomycin and Tacrolimus can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Neomycin belongs to Anti Bacterial; Tacrolimus belongs to Miscellaneous.
Why it happens
Additive nephrotoxicity (and possible ototoxicity) from two agents with renal tubular toxicity.
What to do
Avoid if possible; if oral neomycin is needed, monitor serum creatinine and tacrolimus trough levels and adjust the tacrolimus dose.
