Summary
Opicapone inhibits COMT, and nonselective MAO inhibition blocks the other main route of catecholamine breakdown. Inhibiting both pathways may cause dangerous increases in blood pressure and heart rate. Opicapone labeling contraindicates nonselective MAOIs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Opicapone and Phenelzine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Opicapone belongs to Central Nervous System; Phenelzine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Concurrent inhibition of COMT and MAO prevents catecholamine metabolism and causes accumulation.
What to do
Do not use together. Choose an alternative antidepressant in patients taking opicapone.
