Tetrabenazine prolongs the QT interval in a dose-related way, and oxaliplatin has also been associated with QT prolongation. Combined use may add to the risk of ventricular arrhythmias, especially with electrolyte disturbances.
What this interaction means in plain words
Oxaliplatin and Tetrabenazine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Oxaliplatin belongs to Oncology; Tetrabenazine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic QT prolongation.
What to do
Check ECG and correct potassium and magnesium before and during co-therapy. Use the lowest effective tetrabenazine dose, or choose an alternative if QTc rises significantly.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
