Summary
Oxaliplatin has been associated with QT prolongation and torsades de pointes, and thioridazine strongly prolongs QTc. Used together the risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia increases. Electrolyte disturbances from chemotherapy such as vomiting-related hypokalemia add to the risk.
What this interaction means in plain words
Oxaliplatin and Thioridazine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Oxaliplatin belongs to Oncology; Thioridazine belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive delayed cardiac repolarization and QT prolongation.
What to do
Avoid the combination and use a non-QT-prolonging antipsychotic or antiemetic regimen. If unavoidable, monitor ECG and keep potassium and magnesium normal.
