Oxcarbazepine induces CYP3A4, the main enzyme that metabolizes trazodone, which may lower trazodone concentrations and weaken its effect. Oxcarbazepine can also cause hyponatremia, which adds risk since serotonergic antidepressants may do the same.
What this interaction means in plain words
Oxcarbazepine and Trazodone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Oxcarbazepine belongs to Central Nervous System; Trazodone belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Oxcarbazepine induces CYP3A4, increasing trazodone clearance.
What to do
Monitor clinical response and increase the trazodone dose if necessary. Check serum sodium if symptoms of hyponatremia appear.
