Summary
Zuranolone is a neuroactive steroid with marked sedative effects, and oxycodone is an opioid that depresses the CNS and breathing. Taken together they can produce additive drowsiness, impaired psychomotor performance and respiratory depression. This raises the risk of falls, accidents and overdose.
What this interaction means in plain words
Oxycodone and Zuranolone can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Oxycodone belongs to Musculoskeletal; Zuranolone belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression through GABA-A positive allosteric modulation (zuranolone) and mu-opioid receptor agonism (oxycodone).
What to do
Avoid the combination where possible; if it is needed, lower the dose of one or both drugs and monitor for sedation and respiratory depression. Counsel the patient not to drive or operate machinery.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
