Summary
Phenelzine inhibits MAO-A, the main route of rizatriptan clearance, causing high rizatriptan exposure. Serotonin syndrome and vasoconstriction risk rise. Labeling contraindicates use during and for 2 weeks after an MAOI.
What this interaction means in plain words
Phenelzine and Rizatriptan are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Phenelzine belongs to Central Nervous System; Rizatriptan belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
MAO-A inhibition reduces rizatriptan metabolism and adds serotonergic effects.
What to do
Do not combine and wait 2 weeks after phenelzine before rizatriptan. Use an alternative migraine treatment.
