Summary

Tipranavir is given with ritonavir, which inhibits the enzymes that metabolize propafenone. Propafenone exposure may increase, risking serious arrhythmia and conduction abnormalities.

What this interaction means in plain words

Propafenone and Tipranavir are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Propafenone belongs to Cardiovascular; Tipranavir belongs to Anti Virals.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Ritonavir-boosted tipranavir inhibits CYP2D6 and CYP3A4, reducing propafenone metabolism.

What to do

Avoid the combination. Choose an alternative antiarrhythmic or antiretroviral regimen.
